If you’re planning to propose, there’s one thing that you cannot forget; the ring. Whether your partner is fun and adventurous or shy and relaxed, there’s a ring that will suit her personality and style. With an understanding of different gemstones, colours, sizes, cuts and styles you will be able to design something your significant other will absolutely love! Keep reading for top tips on how to design a ring to suit your partner’s personality.

If she’s …

Adventurous and fun loving

She is adventurous, loves to have fun and explore. She loves to mix it up and try out new things, so a ring that hosts a pear (teardrop) cut diamond could be perfect for her. Also consider adding an element of colour, perhaps through accents, or with a three stone setting utilising coloured gems. Pink diamonds or extravagant gems will help to set off the ring in style. Exciting styles and shapes are what makes her tick, so don’t be afraid to look at rings with interesting features, like coloured gems or interesting band design elements (such as flowers or leaves).

Classy and sophisticated

For a classy and sophisticated woman, you can’t go past traditional round brilliant cut diamond. One of the most popular styles for a reason, it can be set solitaire, with a band of any colour. The most traditional solitaire settings feature a plain band, however it is possible to add a row of diamond accents to the band, or to customise the look with either a trellis or basket setting. If your lady is a traditionalist at heart and appreciates simple beauty and stunning looks, opt for a solitaire setting. A round brilliant cut is a great starting point, but there are other options too. For something sensible but with a different character, a princess cut is another outstanding choice.

Confident, cunning and edgy

For a cunning and edgy partner, who is full of confidence and can hold her own, consider an emerald cut. The unique look of an emerald cut diamond is created by step cuts of its pavilion, and features a large open table at the top. While this cut possesses less sparkle than a brilliant-cut, it offers dramatic long lines, a hall-of-mirrors effect and elegant appeal. The only downside to this cut is that inclusions are more readily visible to the naked eye, so be prepared to invest in a high clarity rock.

Exciting and playful

You can’t go past a halo to add depth and excitement to a radiant or round cut. Alternatively, an unconventional design style that incorporates novel features, like leaves or flowers, can add a playful and exciting twist to the character of the ring. So, for those feel-good playful characters out there, an intricate and unusual band is a great option!

Feminine and dainty

Your partner is very feminine and dainty. She has particular tastes and preferences, and is delicate and pretty. Choose a thin band, perhaps in white gold with a circular or near circular diamond (round, cushion, radiant). Choose a halo design for added effect.

Individual and creative

Full of imagination and original ideas, yet with the energy and stamina to go her own way, your partner is individual and creative – characteristics which provide interesting choices for superb rings that will compliment her character. For someone who sits more on the side of simplicity and practicality, consider a band only, perhaps with embedded baguette stones and antique or extravagant patterns. For the addition of colour, sapphires or other precious gems could give the band a little more pop, or alternatively, a coloured gemstone in a solitaire setting is another option you may wish to consider.

Modern and refined

For those with modern and refined tastes, and yet are somewhat traditional at heart, a princess cut is a great starting point to design the perfect ring. Choose between platinum, white gold, rose gold or yellow gold bands, and set in solitaire, with accents, or as a three stone style. A princess cut offers a lot of possibility, with a refined look and plenty of sparkle.

Reserved and intelligent

Your future bride is sophisticated, reserved and intelligent. She has a great sense of humour and always seems to ‘just know’. For something a little different to the norm, consider choosing an oval cut, a stunning shape that set simply are extremely elegant and brilliant.

The setting

Solitaire setting

Solitaire rings, which feature one centre diamond, are a popular style for engagement rings. They suit nearly all personalities, and are a good place to start as you consider which ring will best suit your partner. It is a timeless design that is traditional and elegant, and yet will not conflict with your partner’s personality.

Accents

Most traditional solitaire rings feature a plain band, although it is possible to also set diamonds in the band. For a classy and alternative to a prevalent solitaire setting, consider adding a row of diamond accents on the band.

Three stone

A three stone ring is another classic setting style that provides many options to get creative and customise the ring to match your partner’s personality. Inject character and life with a three stone setting.

Diamond Cut

Round: A round cut diamond is a typical and traditional cut that offers a lot of sparkle and elegance.
Princess: A square shape, another popular choice for engagement rings.
Cushion: Similar to a princess cut, however slightly rounded on the corners.
Emerald: A rectangle cut with a step cut.
Radiant: Square shaped with gently trimmed corners.
Pear: Also known as a teardrop, typically in a solitaire or halo setting.
Marquise: An elongated oval shape with pointed ends.
Baguette: Similar to an emerald cut, but typically smaller and used as accent stones.

Band

Typical choices include platinum, white gold, rose gold and yellow gold.

Design elements

Classic: Simply set diamond with reserved style.
Halo: One larger diamond set in the middle of the band, surrounded by smaller diamonds forming a ‘halo’ around it.
Band elements: A range of intriguing band elements can be added to a ring, via engraved or jewel leaves, flowers, antique patterns or modern and contemporary looks.

Which ring is right?

Of course, no one person fits an exact stereotype. People are dynamic and express themselves in different ways. However, hopefully this guide has given you a good starting point so that you can design the perfect ring for your partner. Once you have a starting point, investigate different rings, taking note of how differences in cut, band or colours can influence the character that it emits. Take your time and enjoy the opportunity to reflect on the personality and interests of your partner, and have fun making that choice (and if you need help, don’t hesitate to ask!)
