Engagement Ring Trends for 2017

australiandiamondbrokers - Engagement Ring Trends for 2017

Diamonds may be forever, but settings, colours and cuts come and go. Finding the ‘one’ (diamond ring that is) can be hard. Not only because you have to make sure it’s right in every way, but also because it’s going to be on that ring finger forever. This year there are plenty of options to choose from, so we’re looking at how you can stay timeless while still keeping up with the trends.

Spin on the classics

While a single diamond will always be in fashion, 2017 is seeing a slight twist on the classic. Slightly bucking the halo trend, styles are going minimal, understated, and refined. Think a classic round diamond in the middle with two square diamonds on either side. Many people are favouring a twist of the band or prongs to give a single diamond a bit of an edge.

For example, while the prongs fall at approximately where one, five, seven and 11 would fall on a clock for traditional four-pronged settings, newer settings are landing on three, six, nine and 12. What people love about this is while the ring seems simple and traditional at first, the twist gives the ring a unique quality.

You can also take a new spin on the band itself, with diamonds twisted around the band rather than sitting straight, or the whole band twisting up to the central stone.

The halo

The halo has been in fashion forever, and often evokes art-deco memories. It’s not hard to see why this style has always been so popular, with the smaller diamonds bringing attention to the larger, central stone. However, 2017 is set to bring a unique take on the trend including intricate, antique-style designs. On the other end of the spectrum we will also see a number of geometric or colourful halos. Some designers are even moving towards using varying shapes in the halo design, making the ring feel even more unique and vintage in style.

Colour me pretty

A big trend from 2016 that will continue into 2017 is the bold use of colour. Rather than one single coloured stone, we’ll see a movement towards accents. For example, a pink diamond halo. There may also be a swing towards pairing coloured stones with different shaped diamonds. Think about a ring with a square cut diamond set with a round cut ruby.

Another trend we’ll see this year is a move towards coloured bands. Rather than white gold or platinum, rose gold and yellow gold are coming back in style. In fact, rose gold continues to be one of the most popular choices for brides looking for a unique, more feminine ring.

Alternatively, go the other way and opt for a black diamond. Many brides-to-be love the edgier look of a darker-coloured stone. While some choose a single black diamond, many use the darker-coloured hue to accent their main diamond.

It’s all in the details

While many brides choose a detailed engagement ring, the emerging trend is to modernise the look. Brides-to-be who do want more than one single stone can choose to move the extra stones to the sides of the setting, rather than cascading down the top. From the top, it may look like a single stone but when viewing from the side you’ll be surprised with a completely different look.

Vintage designs

Glamorous and timeless, vintage engagement rings are often passed down between generations. But they can be designed as well, and the trend will become increasingly popular in 2017. What’s old is new again and there are ways to design a vintage-inspired ring with a touch of modern flair. You can also choose to make adjustments to a vintage ring to add your own personal story or personal preferences, maintaining a balance of old and new.

Not too matchy-matchy

Despite what may have happened in the past, many engagement rings were not made with a matching wedding band in mind. While many people choose an engagement ring while considering what the wedding band will look like against it, 2017 is bucking this trend, allowing brides-to-be to have a more unique look and pairing. If you think about the vintage engagement rings, they are not meant to match perfectly with a band. Choose a unique engagement ring and a band that compliments, rather than matches.

Clusters

The trend for multiple diamonds doesn’t necessarily mean they all need to be the same size and shape, or designed symmetrically either. The choice to cluster the diamonds on one side of the ring, or group various sizes and shapes together is a popular one.

Delicate settings

One trend that will never go out of style is the single stone in an intricate setting. Sometimes, there’s no need to pop for a massive diamond in order to create the buzz you want. Set the correct way, with the appropriate clarity and colour, a smaller centre stone can really make a mark. The simple setting suits brides wanting a delicate look and allows the single stone to speak for itself.
