From metallic accents to bold and vibrant colours, 2016 is shaping up to be an exciting year for wedding trends that are sophisticated, customised and chic. Here we’ll talk through some of the biggest wedding trends we expect to see as the year progresses.
All that glitters…
This year we are set to see metallic hues rise in popularity. This is the opinion of New York event-planning expert Harriette Rose Katz, who recently gave a quote for Bridal Guide. “Depending on how and where you bring them into your celebration,” she says, “they can be elegant, whimsical, ethereal or even very natural.”
While vibrant gold colours will be popular at black tie events, expect to see rose gold making its presence felt, used for everything from wedding bands to table linen, and incorporated into decorative elements such as outdoor lanterns. Silver is set to take a back seat this year with warmer metallics taking center stage.
Make it yours
In the past many brides have simply tried to recreate a scene they’ve seen posted on Pinterest. However this year we will see couples wanting to put their own completely unique spin on their special day.
“Couples today want a wedding that showcases who they are, that’s a fun experience for their guests and that won’t look or feel dated — ever,” says event planner Alison Laesser-Keck of VLD Events, as quoted in Bridal Guide. This ‘personal spin’ adds a quirky and unexpected element of excitement to a bride and groom’s special day, and helps create unique memories that will be remembered.
Destination affairs
According to Huffington Post, 25% of all weddings are destination weddings. These events ensure the bridal party and guests can enjoy a few days of celebrations (and much needed holiday time) before and after the big event.
Destination weddings generally cause guest lists to shrink, which is why there has been a rise in ‘highlight videos.’ These videos are really popular, especially with those having destination weddings, as people get married with only a few guests but then having a large celebration upon return with their extended family and friends. These videos are the ideal way to share highlights of the ceremony and reception with those who were unable to attend.
Pets in weddings
Brit.com predicts we will see even more pets in weddings in 2016. While pets have been popular in weddings in recent years, wedding expert Mindy Weisssays,“We’ll see more pets in things like save the dates or engagement announcements as well in the actual ceremony.”
Brunch ‘I do’s’
Glamour.com makes the big predicition that this year we are set to see brunch weddings rise in popularity. For one, this ensures your budget stretches further with your wedding brunch able to be far more extravagant than a dinner. For an Australian’s, a poolside brunch ceremony could be the perfect excuse for a pool party wedding.
Woodland themes and natural details
Robin & Laura of Gather Events told Glamour.com they predict woodland themed events to be big this year – featuring florals and decor with dense greenery and wooden accents. Overall, it appears details such as wooden laser cut place cards will be popular in 2016, with natural elements taking pride of place as the key decorative element for many wedding receptions. Stone, cement, and cork will also be used for rustic-inspired events.
Bust a move
According to Huffington Post, more couples will be dancing up and down the aisle this year than ever before. Making a unique entrance to your wedding ceremony isn’t a new trend, but finding new ways to incorporate dance into your special day is gaining even more traction in 2016.
Wedding dress trends
- The convertible – With wedding dresses often taking up much of the wedding budget, it’s no wonder some brides are opting for convertible wedding dresses that can take you from ceremonial chic to party ready for the reception in seconds. Huffington Post predicts this trend to be big this year.
- Loads of volume – According to Onefabday.com, the recent Cinderella movie has had a real influence on the bridal catwalks of 2016. Bridal designers are creating gowns with voluminous tulle, perfect for the bride who wants her fairytale ending.
- 3D Floral embellishments – From leaves to vines, to three-dimensional floral appliques and embellishments, Onefabday.com also predicts petals and flowers will become a popular theme with wedding dresses this year.
- Separates – With separates becoming a popular trend for work, evening and formal wear, it was only a matter of time before bridal designers began to incorporate the trend into their own handywork. Separates are clearly going to be a bridal wear trend this year, and will not only be seen on the bride, but the bridesmaids too.
Floral arrangements
This year couples are set to favour whatever flowers are in season and local. Casey Schwartz and Kit Wertz of Flower Duet told Bridal Guide that couples often want a ‘wild’ look to their flowers, claiming “what they’re after are freshly picked blooms.” These free-form centerpieces will include flowers of different sizes and colours, and will also include things like fruiting vines and even fragrant herbs like mint or basil.
- Potted elements – Another big trend we will see this year will be using succulents, ferns and potted trees as focal points in decor. Amber Karson and Emily Butler of Karson Butler Events told Bridal Guide that it’s good to change up the table arrangements which don’t need to match. “All tables need not look the same,” they said.
- Bouquets – When it comes to bouquets, expect to see a lot more cascades as opposed to posies in 2016. These lend themselves towards a more free-flowing bouquet, featuring a range of different flower shapes, sizes and textures.
Naked cakes
When it comes to cakes, one of the biggest trends we will witness this year is the rise of the naked cake, according to Bridalguide.com. These cakes are either unfrosted or partially frosted, and topped with berries or fresh flowers.
When it comes to wedding trends, and deciding what looks are best for you, it’s a good idea to consider different ideas as a couple, and consider what suits your personality, the type of wedding you’re after, and your budget. There’s one thing that is for certain – we’re set to enjoy a spectacular year of weddings featuring fun, new and exciting ideas during the year ahead.
